"Delightful"
Set in the world of the Gadda, a world that appears to be
identical to ours with one important exception. It is the
home of two races; the Gadda who have access to magic, and
the humans. There is one paramount rule for all Gadda.
They must keep their true identities secret from all
humans. Some do this by living in the Irish town of
Sclossin where most of the residents are Gadda. Others
live and work among the humans just being careful to appear
human. For the most part, both factions keep out of each
others way but there are things happening in the background
that will force them to work together. When Maggie Shaunessy writes a story about magic, she is
sent back home to her family in disgrace and required to
conceal her magic. And that is when her life becomes
interesting. THE SECRET ONES is one of those books that grabs you from
the very first. And the pacing of the tale is pure magic.
Ms. Murphy has a very deft touch with interspersing tension
with humor. There is never a dull moment in this book. Ms. Murphy has done a wonderful job with the characters.
They all just jump right off the pages and there is just a
variety of them that everyone should find it easy to relate
to at least one of them. I have to admit that I just fell
in love with Maggie. A lot of strange things happen around
her yet she keeps her equilibrium and works her way through
everything. Her grandfather is another character that is
easy to relate too. He has too much pride and power to ask
for help even when he needs it. My only disappointment with this book is that it ended.
And luckily for me, the second book is out already.
