"Fantastic introduction to WindLegends Saga!"
Weir and his sister Genevieve—Genny—Saur lost their home
and their parents when they were children. Raised
separately, it has taken Weir a long time to find his
sister. Now Weir has a ship and the two of them live in the
pirate village of Montyne Cay. While out on the seas one
day, they come across an empty ship—a ghost ship according
to the first mate—and Weir decides to investigate. A bit
freaked out, they find the ship has absolutely nothing
salvageable on it. Then they hear a sound, very faint. When
they trace it to its source, they find two men—neither in
very good condition being dehydrated. One of them has been
beaten severely and has a tattoo on his wrist. As soon as
Patrick Kasella—Weir's best friend—sees the tattoo, he
recognizes it as the mark of a prisoner of the Labyrinth
since he has one as well. Slowly, they nurse both men back
to health and when he can finally speak, they find out the
man with the tattoo is none other than Syn-Jern Sorn—son of
the man who took Weir's land and home. Immediately enraged
he helped his enemy, Weir eventually changes his mind when
he hears Syn-Jern's story. Turns out Syn-Jern was raised
without kindness or love and was betrayed by the woman he
loved and his step-brother. He was framed for murder and
sentenced to the Labyrinth for ten years. Of course, when
Syn-Jern sees Genny, he's attracted to her, but she wants
nothing to do with him and makes her feelings well known.
Syn-Jern has plans of his own—revenge. While in Montyne Cay, Syn-Jern is drawn into the forest by
something he hears. Since Genny doesn't trust him, she
follows him to a beautiful waterfall. Unfortunately, on
their way back to the village, Genny falls into a hole and
Syn-Jern follows her, injuring his ankle. Genny waits until
Syn-Jern wakes up and cajoles him into climbing out of the
hole, only to realize there are Tribunal Guards in the
area. In order to allow Genny to escape back to the
village, Syn-Jern allows himself to be caught. Realizing
his sacrifice and how much he cares for her, Genny begins
to fall in love with Syn-Jern. All the men in the village volunteer to help rescue Syn-
Jern from the Tribunal Guards and they do. Once well, Syn-
Jern receives training from all the villagers. While
sparring with Patrick one day, Syn-Jern unleashes a very
strong power, almost killing Patrick. This decides their
next course of action—they need to find a man to train Syn-
Jern in his power and so off they go. Is there a chance for Syn-Jern and Genny? How does Patrick
feel about this? Will Syn-Jern be able to take his revenge
on his step-brother and the woman he loved? What of the
Tribunal? Will they leave Syn-Jern alone, or will they
pursue him? WINDCHANCE is the perfect sequel of the WINDLEGENDS SAGA.
Once more, Charlotte Boyett-Compo gives us more stories of
familiar families with the Sorns, Crees, and MacGregors. We
also learn more of Montyne Cay and the life of the pirates.
But as always, this is a story of a love meant to be and we
do get that promise fulfilled in spades. The end really
made this story though. I found myself shedding tears with
Patrick's sacrifice. All in all, an excellent story and one
not to be missed.
