"Immortal love story!"
Isabel Godfroie Heart is currently engaged in her
occupation—hunting demons. See Isabel is a Paradisian
Scholar—human, immortal, trained in the ancient Paradisian
languages and a demon hunter. At the moment, Isabel is
dealing with memory loss. The demon Dreadacus not only
stole her memories but imprisoned her in hell, where she
was rescued by her guardian, Gabriel. As if that isn't
enough, her only family—her brother Benedict—was just
killed so Isabel has no one left. Now Gabriel has a new
assignment for Isabel—she is to translate some ancient text
for a prince of darkness, Nicolai Valentine, a prince of
the Grigorcov. She will only have two weeks to finish her
assignment, which was handed down by the prince of Paradise
himself. Before heading to Valentine's estate, Isabel goes
to see the gatekeeper—a human tasked with overseeing one of
the gateways between the human plane and the others—to see
what she can learn of Nicolai. While there, Isabel finds
out her brother left her a letter, something she isn't
quite ready to deal with yet. Nicolai Valentine is still grieving the loss of his two
sons and his wife. When Nicolai went to save his cousin,
his sons were brutally murdered. Finding her boys in this
condition unhinged his wife and eventually Nicolai had no
choice but to sever ties with her, and return her to her
family. Now that same cousin has been infected with the
Hadean virus, which will slowly obliterate his soul,
leaving a spirit, and condemning any Grigori infected with
it to eternal torture. While Nicolai may not be too
concerned with Simon, his niece has been infected as well
and Nicolai refuses to allow Clara to suffer such a fate.
The only cure for the virus is to drink from the Crimson
Chalice, which has been lost. Since the Grigori are not
allowed to know the ancient languages, Nicolai needs the
assistance of a Scholar to find it. As soon as these two meet, sparks fly. However, Isabel
knows Nicolai is hiding something from her, something very
important. Turns out Benedict was working with Nicolai
under the table, and Isabel cannot figure out why her
brother would jeopardize his whole career for someone he
didn't like. When Isabel meets Clara, she determines to do
everything she possibly can to find the Crimson Chalice. Will Isabel find out what Nicolai is hiding from her? Will
she find out why Benedict was working for Nicolai and how
he was killed? What of the sparks between Isabel and
Nicolai? Do they have a past Isabel can't remember? Will
Isabel get her memories back from Dreadacus? Will they be
able to find the Crimson Chalice? PARADISIAN CHRONICLES BOOK 1: SHADOWS OF THE SOUL is a non-
stop thrilling adventure from the very first page.
Angelique Armae comes through with an interesting premise
filled with all kinds of interesting beings, a story filled
with enough plots and subplots that kept me turning pages,
and a love that nothing could stop. This story will stay
with me for a long, long time. Can't wait for the next one
in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and cannot
recommend it highly enough. Well done, Angelique Armae!
