"An exciting look at the world of demons!"
Emma Meyers was a normal teenager, until the day she came
across a demon being attacked. When Emma tried to help the
woman, she inadvertently ended up ingesting the demon's
essence, thereby becoming something totally unique—a human
demon hybrid. As Allay, she has had to learn to adjust to
life again. To begin with, demons don't sleep, eat or
drink, instead they live off the emotions of humans. When
other demons caught wind of Allay's unique essence, they
all wanted a taste of her. So in order to survive, Allay
moved to New York and is now under Vex's protection. After
all, Allay is of Vex's line. So she manages a bar with an
apartment upstairs and does the odd job for Vex in order to
ensure her protection. One night as she's closing the bar, her best friend Shock
comes in. Turns out Shock has absorbed so much energy,
she's about to give birth—demon style—and has come to Allay
for help. Then again, Shock has an ulterior motive for
wanting to give birth with Allay around. Shock knows Allay
must soon ingest another demon's essence and she wants
Allay to "take" her newborn offspring. Not surprisingly,
Allay refuses. There's no way she can condone taking
another demon's life—even if it's to sustain her own. Allay
knows other demons will have felt when Shock gave birth, so
she doubles her security, only to have another demon attack
her right outside the bar. When a handsome stranger appears
and saves her and then refuses medical treatment, Allay
takes Theo to her apartment and fixes him up. When Allay
goes down into the bar to deal with some of Vex's business,
she feels Shock's essence change and races back up to her
apartment to find out what's going on. When she gets there,
she finds Shock almost drained and sees someone escaping
through her skylight. Allay is thoroughly confused because
she couldn't sense another demon in the area. Now her only
thought is get Shock to safety. When Theo offers to become
her bodyguard, Allay is conflicted. She could sure use the
help, but how will she keep what she is from him? Who can Allay trust? Is there a reason Vex is ensuring
Allay's safety? Who tried to drain Shock? What of Theo?
What part does he play in all this? Will Allay take another
demon's life in order to sustain her own? CONFESSIONS OF A DEMON is nonstop action from beginning to
end. S.L. Wright does a fantastic job of world building
with demon hierarchy and politics. I never once felt lost
in this world of demons. And I loved the names: Allay;
Shock; Vex; Revel. There's a bit of everything in this
story, from good friends to danger and romance. At the core
of this story is Allay, who is constantly trying to retain
her humanity which creates great conflicts within her. This
is a very compelling read. I hated to stop reading it and
eagerly picked up the book again, even if I only had a few
minutes to read. A very good story and one I highly
recommend.

After accidentally stealing the life force of a dying demon, Allay became the only human-demon hybrid in existence. Demons feed on human emotions, so Allay decided the safest way to satisfy this need-and still retain some semblance of her humanity-was to open a bar. Here she can drink from, and ease, her patrons' pain, which has helped her to stay under the demon radar...until now. When Allay is attacked and nearly killed by another demon, a human comes to her rescue. Theo Ram is tall, handsome, and mortal-and Allay feels a connection to him she didn't think she'd ever know. But that bond is tested when the demon community in New York begins to rise up, and two opposing clans fight for power. Now Allay is caught in the middle, and she must decide where her loyalties lie.
