"Curses, ancient vampires, and steamy romance"
The first of the Dark Goddess series is set in the time in
Scottish history after the fall of the Roman Empire, but
before Christianity had swept the region. Cat Anna, a
follower of the old religion, curses the Prince Aedan by
that if he touches a woman, he will turn into a cat. In
his exile, he meets the mysterious Cordea. Interestingly,
Cordea is also cursed, having lived as a vampire for
centuries. The two are inexplicably drawn to each other. Aedan must kill Cat Anna to reverse the curse and regain
his rightful place as the heir to the throne. Cordea has
her own history with Cat Anna, and with those who try to
come between she and Aedan. The story starts as a tale of
two people fighting their own demons, but becomes an epic
history of the changing landscape in this ancient culture. At first, I was bored. The pacing was slow, the plot not
apparent. Honestly, I thought about giving up. I'm so glad I didn't! Around page one hundred fifty, the story shifts and the
author hit her groove. The tale of these two lovers starts
bridging not only their relationship but also the differing
religious sects and cultures, adding much needed intrigue.
After this point, the pacing greatly improves. Also, the
characters become more delineated, fitting better into the
story as a whole. Although starting off slow, I ended up loving
this book. I cannot wait for more.
