"Liu is a masterful storyteller"

Having lost an arm in a horrible series of events, Soria has isolated herself for the past year. Attempting to get back into life, she's on her way to an interview in New York when she's intercepted by two individuals hired out to bring her back to Dirk & Steele. It seems that her gift for languages is desperately needed and there is no one else they can turn to. Intrigued, she decides to take on the assignment.

Karr, a chimera from thousands of years ago, is awakened from death after an earthquake unseals his tomb. Disoriented and confused, he lashes out at what he deems to be the enemy when his warnings go unheeded. What he doesn't realize is that his language hasn't been spoken for centuries and no one can understand him. When Soria arrives, speaking his language, his suspicions keep him quiet until he can no longer stand his silent imprisonment. Finally speaking, they are interrupted when a group of hooded attackers tries to lay claim to him and Soria. Barely escaping with thier lives they're on the run, not knowing who they can trust.

Marjorie Liu is a masterful storyteller. The Fire King is the 9th in the Dirk & Steele series. Filled with intrigue and deception, the story gathers you in and keeps you there. If I hadn't had a life I had to live outside of books, I would've read this in one sitting.

Long ago, shape-shifters were plentiful, soaring through the sky as crows, racing across African veldts as cheetahs, raging furious as dragons atop the Himalayas. Like gods, they reigned supreme. But even gods have laws, and those laws, when broken, destroy.

Zoufalství. Epätoivo. Asa. Three words in three very different languages, and yet Soria understands. Like all members of Dirk & Steele, she has a gift, and hers is communication. When she is chosen to learn the dead language of a shape-shifter resurrected after thousands of years of icy sleep, she discovers a warrior consumed with fury.

Strong as a lion, quick as a serpent—Karr is his name, and in his day he was king. But he is a son of strife, a creature of tragedy. As fire consumed all he loved, so death was to be his atonement. Now, against his will, he has awoken. Zoufalství. Epätoivo. Asa. In English, the word is despair. But Soria knows the words for love.
