"Music, Witches and Seeing Ghosts"
A young widow, Dessa Blackwell has been alone far too
long. She has no income, her debts are piling up and she
decides to do what any witch worth her spells would do -
she casts a Money Spell which she will finish the night of
the Witching Moon. Strangely enough, she gets a call from
a band, Serpent's Stone; needing a make-up artist for their
concert that very night! When she meets the lead singer,
Nick Hijuela, she thinks she's died and gone to Heaven or
certainly gone without for much too long. He is
astonishingly handsome, with an aura that she can't quite
understand. Meanwhile, her sisters-witches in their own right-are
mounting an uprising against the old hag who has
been "Queen of the Witches" for years and it is time she
steps aside. They no longer want royalty, they want a
Witches' Council which will rule more justly than Madame
Delacroix ever has. Supposedly, Madame has a long-lost
granddaughter out there somewhere who would rule after her,
but she has never been seen. Events take place that demand Dessa travel with the band
for the rest of their tour. Can she find out what Nick
seems to be hiding and vice versa? Also involved in the
plot are her deceased husband's ghost and the ghost of a
young woman who warns her to stay away from Nick because
she will end up dead. Dessa thinks the young woman has
died of an overdose and assumes she was a concert "hanger-
on." Not. An interesting plot. I love witch novels and this one is
right up there with my favorites for 2009. The author
built the drama well and it didn't stop building until the
final chapter. The night of The Witching Moon
brings surprises for everyone!
