"Wonderful fantasy!"
Cianan ta Daneal has been having nightmares right after his
initiation as Lady's champion, high warrior-priest for the
sun-goddess, the Lady of Light. They are what has drawn him
to this strange land of Shamar from his home in Poshnari-
Unai, the elven capital city. He sees a swordswoman being
attacked by a legion of skeletons and he knows she will die
if he does not save her. Along with his war mare, Kikeona—
with whom he shares a partner bond—he finds himself in
Shamar. Of course, Kikeona is disguised as an old mare,
while Cianan appears as a mercenary. Eventually, he finds
himself at the Mercenaries Guild and proves himself up to
the challenge and becomes a member. At his evening meal, he
sees the woman of his visions and sits down at her table,
only to have her leave after giving him a false name. Not
only is she the woman of his visions, but she is life-mate. Maleta was not always as she is now. Once, she was the
daughter of Kunigonde, the gateway to the south from
Shamar. That is, until Kunigonde was betrayed by within and
she saw her mother and father killed before her eyes and
was left as a spoil of war to the men who attacked her
home. Of course, the whole thing was brought about by
Sunniva, the evil Shamari queen. After she was physically
healed, Maleta went on to follow the ways of Hedda, the
goddess of balance. Now, Maleta is Hedda's Sword and uses
her goddess-given sword to deal out Hedda's justice. Not
surprisingly, Matela is on a quest of her own—to find the
Wolf who killed her parents and little brother. Eventually Cianan and Maleta come together in a Shamaru
camp. The Shamaru were originally in this land and have now
become prosecuted by Sunniva. One thing leads to another
and eventually, the Shamaru and some of the Shamari unite
to overthrow the evil queen. Will they be able to overthrow Sunniva? What of the men who
follow her? Will Cianan ever be able to win Maleta's heart
given her past? What of the fact she is mortal and he is
immortal? Will Cianan's vision come true and Maleta will
die? Will he survive if she does? HEDDA'S SWORD is a wonderful, heart-warming fantasy of the
power of love and redemption. Renee Wildes offers us a very
well-written, engaging story. We're brought into a country
ruled by an evil queen where the native people are being
annihilated. We have a woman raped and left for dead as a
child trying to rebuild her life and turns to revenge. We
have a true hero, willing to work to help his life mate in
any way he can. This story has enough going on to have held
my attention throughout. And, of course, we have the
heartfelt sigh at the end. This is a very good story and
one I highly recommend.
