"caught in the middle of a vampire and werewolf war"
Kathy McKenna is a 23 year old who decides that with the
vampire and werewolf war going on she needs to move to the
small, mid-western town of Oak Hollow, a supposedly neutral
territory, to get away from it all. She decides to settle
down in the quaint town and open up a bookstore and live
the quiet life. Only problem is she ends up walking smack
dab in the middle of it all. Raphael Cordova is a vampire, but not just any vampire.
The offspring of a vampire father and mortal mother, he's
doesn't have the drawbacks of "turned" vampires. Rafe is
also the godson to the most ancient living vamp and is the
appointed leader of the North American Vampires. On the
night that Rafe enters the town's new bookstore, he knows
that he has found his soul mate. Convinced that no good
could possibly come from their union, he vows to keep away
form the lovely Kathy. Unfortunately that is easier said
than done. To make matters worse, Hunters have come to Oak Hollow and
soon Kathy, Rafe, and some of their friends find themselves
unwilling guinea pigs in the Hunter's efforts to
cure the world of vampires and werewolves. As Rafe and Kathy continue in their relationship to know
one another better, Rafe soon finds himself helplessly in
love with Kathy. Kathy, on the other hand, has a hard time
reconciling her love for Rafe with the fact that he's a
vampire. This is the only part of the story that I wasn't
wild about. I wanted to like Kathy, but at times I found
her whiny and naïve. Even when the story ends, I don't
ever get the feeling that Kathy ever really accepts Rafe's
vampirism. All in all, this wasn't a bad book at all -- it
had a solid storyline, but I personally just couldn't get
into the heroine.
