"a story where emotions survive the bleakness of the future"
Galen is a space explorer in the twenty-fourth century.
His mission is to survey and catalog all life forms found
on the planet known as "8361X." When Galen captures Rei, a
female humanoid, he claims her as his reward. He plans to
turn her into his devoted pet to serve at his pleasure and
tend to his every sexual desire. Back on Earth, affection
and familial relationships have long been abandoned in
pursuit of scientific advances. As a result, Galen has
left behind his emotions and the one person who means the
most to him. Now that he has Rei, he fully intends to
break her. Galen is determined to establish himself as the
center of her universe. He will never be lonely again. Rei knows that physically she is no match for Galen, but
she has a remarkable intellect despite the fact that he
believes her to be ignorant. He views her kind as
primitive and animalistic, thereby justifying his rough
treatment of her. Though she has been tethered and forced
to submit to unbearable humiliation, Rei is determined to
survive. Galen has clearly conveyed his cruel intentions,
but Rei detects vulnerability in him. Rei's life is doomed
unless she can find a way to connect with Galen on a level
that forces him to see her as something more than a prized
possession. Galen will never cure his loneliness until he
learns to accept Rei as his equal, but will he? Make no mistake, this novella does not tell the story of a
warm and fuzzy love affair. Rei is bound against her will
and forced to endure various acts without consent. But
just as Galen's dominant behavior begins to appear
gratuitous, the story changes course. It seems that along
with the erotic content, Vonna Harper attempted to sneak in
some thought-provoking notions. On a speculative level
there are some very interesting issues raised, but the
effort falls short offering too little too late. Though
some aspects of the story are left unresolved, readers of
GALEN'S PET will be rewarded with a satisfying conclusion.

| SUMMARY |

Capture her, bring her to her knees and under his control. When space explorer Galen first spots the beautiful and wild fem-beast, nothing is more important than wrapping his ropes around the fleeing creature. He'll thoroughly examine her and reveal her secrets, particularly her sexual responses. He has no expectation that her intellect will match his, no hope that she might fill the empty spaces inside him. Years without a woman in his bed have made him hungry. He'll take what he can, whether she wants it or not. And when he's done with her, he'll walk away emotionally untouched. As the fierce stranger's ropes bring her down, independent Rei vows to survive. She might not be able to protect her body from the powerful man, but he'll never reach her heart or soul. She will not respond; she will not! And then he touches her...
