REVIEW

"Wonderful story of love and betrayal!"

The family Aeolian is meeting in their special chamber. Well, all but one of the family anyway. The one missing is the reason King Barren, Laird of the Faolchunna, called the meeting with his wife and all his other children. Turns out Prince Glade is missing and has been for quite some time. Of course, his Lady-wife wouldn't contact them with news, even if she knew anything on his whereabouts. All this just makes Queen Adelie feel even more guilty. After all, she is the one who set up the match and unfortunately for the Faolchunna, there is no such thing as divorce among their kind. Since they're at a standstill with the situation, a couple of the princes suggest hiring a Hell Hag, Lauryl Coedil, a Daughter of the Night from Bandar to find Glade and bring him home. Once they get over their shock at the suggestion of hiring a Hell Hag, they all agree, so the princes take care of it.

Lauryl makes a good living doing what she does. She's good at it and so can command high fees for her services. Of course, since she works so hard, she also plays equally as hard and is quite sexually active. The fact she's beautiful just makes it easy for her. When the Aeolian princes approach her about finding Glade, Lauryl takes the case. Eventually, Lauryl learns Glade is being held in a dungeon by his Lady-wife, Lady Rolanda des Grieves and her lover, and they are torturing him. After she finds Glade, she realizes he's in really bad shape, so as quickly as she can, she makes for the rendezvous point with his brothers. When Glade falls off her horse, Lauryl knows she will have to stop. As soon as she realizes Glade needs sustenance, she offers him her wrist, not aware of the consequences. Even though Glade knows it is against Clan law to take the blood of a living creature, he is too weak to resist, and he does know what will happen. Just as the rain hits, the two of them manage to get to a village and can only acquire one room at the Inn. Not that Lauryl really minds. After all, Glade is a handsome male specimen and she won't have a problem sharing a room, or a bed for that matter, with him.

Not surprisingly, the more time the two of them spend together, the stronger the attraction between them grows, until it becomes more than that. However, among the Faolchunna, nothing more can come of their relationship. Not only is there no divorce among the Faolchunna, but once they are married, they cannot have sex with anyone other than their spouse. When Glade took Lauryl's blood, he bound Lauryl to him so she will not be able to have sex with anyone other than Glade. Lauryl doesn't really see this as a problem and is more than happy to do away with Lady Rolanda. Unfortunately, this is not possible either, for Glade cannot kill his Lady-wife, nor can Lauryl since she is now bonded to him.

Will Lady Rolanda get away with her treatment of Prince Glade? Is there any chance of a relationship between Glade and Lauryl? What punishment will Glade be forced to endure for taking Lauryl's blood?

WINDBORN is a frolicking fantasy adventure. Once more, Charlotte Boyett-Compo pulled me into the story from the very first page and didn't let go until the last word. Even then I wanted more. As with all of Charlotte Boyett-Compo's stories, we have a hero tortured beyond what any man should have to endure. At one point, I have to admit, I really didn't like Queen Adelie because of what her son had to go through due to her actions. But she did redeem herself. Lauryl is a free spirit and does what she wants, when she wants, never beholden to anyone, nor does Glade try to change her. This really is a very good read and one I highly recommend.
