"Showalter delivers an incredibly passionate and thrilling ride!"
Maddox was once an immortal guard to the gods, but was
cursed when his pride was wounded when he was not chosen to
guard the dimOuniak, a sacred box housing demons so
vile and destructive they could not even be trusted in
hell. When the gods chose the female warrior, Pandora,
Maddox and the other guards stole the box and unwittingly
opened and released the demons upon the unsuspecting
world. As their punishment, each immortal guard was
saddled with one of the demons to live out the rest of
their immortal lives in pain and torment.
Maddox has lived untold centuries with the demon Violence
living within him. The man and demon have virtually become
one and, as such, it is a never-ending struggle for Maddox
to contain the demon as he beckons Maddox to do vile and
malicious things. He has grown weary of his tormented
existence and of having to live in constant fear of harming
others -- especially innocents.
For all her life, Ashlyn Darrow has lived in agony. For no
matter how much time has passed, Ashlyn can hear the every
voice and conversation that ever took place in any location
she passes. Some call this a gift, but Ashlyn knows it for
what it is -- a curse. For what else could it be when as a
child, your own parent's send you away because they can't
deal with your "gift" anymore?
Having worked -- and lived -- with the World Institute of
Parapsychology since she was a child, Ashlyn has listened
to rumors of vampires, goblins, witches and countless
Others. Upon arriving in Budapest, Ashlyn
hears of these men, these angels, as some of
the locals refer to the men who live atop the hill
overlooking the city. They don't seem to know what to make
of these men that never seem to age, but have also helped
keep them safe and their city free of crime. In an attempt
to ease her torment, Ashlyn decides that she must meet
these men. Once Ashlyn and Maddox meet, the attraction is
instant. But having dealt with demon-hunters in the past,
Maddox is unsure of Ashlyn's true intentions. Is she
really who she seems or could this be a trap?
I found The Darkest Night an incredibly riveting and
passionate book. I couldn't put this book down and
devoured it in one night. The premise of the book was
so "fresh" -- immortal guards cursed with the demons from
Pandora's Box -- I don't believe I'd ever read anything
along these lines before and I loved it. The magnitude of
the guardians torment and suffering -- both physical and
emotionally -- is staggering and you can't help but
sympathize with the characters. I know as I read the book
and discovered which demon each guardian was cursed with, I
found myself more and more looking forward to the future
books in this series. And while I know there are at least
two more, I'm really hoping that we readers will be treated
to more than that.
