"Diplomatic mission becomes life changing for Starship Colonel Valerian Grant"
Starship Colonel Valerian Grant and his crew have been
enjoying recently found old movies from Earth. He found
many similarities during this assignment to Xenda, a human
colony that decided to have a special type of culture based
on gallantry, elegance, and limited technology. Xenda has
the appeal of history without the smell; so is a popular
tourist colony. They are at Queen Fira's Coronation representing the
Confederation. Unofficially though their orders are to seek
out and protect Xenda against the Immortals. Some stories
say the Immortals are energy creatures, others give them
humanoid appearance and although an unknown entity, they
are believed to be scale ten psychics and have a superior
technology. The legend of Immortals Dia, Matthew and Fionna and the
battles after Xenda's king Keogh wed Dia was the basis for
their concern. When Dia left, she said if they ever needed
her, she would return - reminding them of the King Arthur
stories - a once and future queen. It is rumored that
Fionna has returned and plans another battle. Whether Immortals are fairy tales or real, there is
something dangerous happening and Val becomes Fira's
protector. After his wife's death, he had been
inconsolable but at the suggestion of the queen's regent,
Val is considering becoming Fira's consort although he
finds himself obsessed with the dead queen Dia. Queen Fira assigned lifelong friend and guardian to her and
Prince Gregory to help Val with his investigation. Patrick
Blood was nicknamed ERROR Flynn for his loveable, but often-
unpredictable help. The attack by Fionna on Xenda's people
and rescue of the queen requires the help of all involved.
Who among the Xenden people is helping their enemy? Val
must choose to go with Patrick to confront the enemy or to
rescue Queen Fira. This is a sci-fi adventure story rather than a romance,
although there is enough relationship focus to make it an
enjoyable alternate read for a futuristic romance lover.
The setting of a futuristic story in an historical culture
setting will be comfortable and some of the references to
old movies will add a smile but not distract if you are not
familiar with the movie mentioned. Although story points
are resolved by the HEA, the revelation of the true
identity of the Immortal left some mixed feelings and
possibilities for future stories. Cy Korte © Copyright December, 2001 for eBOOKISLE.com &
