"a fantastic and intriguing world"
An intriguing world view of what could possibly have been.
Set in the gorgeous and picturesque San Francisco and the
splendor of Northern California in a not so distant future
lays a world of humans, Psy and Changelings alike, trying
to coexist without another war. Power plays and games,
genetic manipulation and evolution, wars and treaties, cool
and hot, genius and madness, psychic and psychotic... man
and woman. Amid looming war, distrust of species, fears
of insanity and the burning need to bring justice two of
the most unlikeliest beings will come together, cool and
hot becomes one and warm. Lucas Hunter is a Changeling, an Alpha Leopard, and a
Panther of great power, strength and skill. While trying
to make the best deals with the Psy possible for his
people's protection Lucas must solve a gruesome string of
murders. The murders lead directly to the Psy and their
cold minds. The psychic mind can be powerful and cold
with no emotion, but that power can sometimes bring madness
and murderous actions. All Psy are to be distrusted, all
until she came into the picture. She was cool yes, but
lurking below was something else that called to his Panther
in the most primitive of ways. Sascha Duncan is a Cardinal Psy, or she appears to be
anyway, she is marked with the distinctive traits, should
have the ability, should but doesn't. What she has is
emotion and that is one thing the Psy do not allow, Silence
is allowed, emotions lead to individualism and possibly to
madness, but most assuredly they lead also to
Rehabilitation. If that is not death, it will be a fate
worse than death, one Sascha will go to great pains to
avoid. She lives daily with the fear her emotions will
spill over and she will be discovered and taken by
PsyNet. Something she fears even more when a Changeling
threatens to bring all of her emotions and sensuality to
the surface, all of her desires and her fears. Lucas seeks to stop the murders killing Changeling women,
always suspecting a Psy. He never bargained on finding one
he couldn't live without, but how could they live
together. Sascha has desired, been lonely and wants
desperately to feel the heat being in the arms Lucas
promises, but could it be her death sentence as well.
Amid, wars, politics, psychics, changelings, humans and
killers they must find a way to a future that includes them
both. Absolutely a fantastic and intriguing world, Ms. Singh's
style and imagination is incredible, beautiful, brilliant,
sensual and so action packed that you simply can't tear
yourself away. Her characters are vibrant, deliciously
alpha, warmly sexual, delightfully funny and very
intelligent. Nalini Singh promises to be a brilliant star
in paranormal fiction; I am completely and totally
hooked! Have the next book handy if you can, because you
will devour this one and hunger for more, guaranteed. As a
lover of paranormal romance, I highly recommend Ms. Singh
and her book Slave to Sensation to anyone who is a fan of
intense, articulate and gorgeous, romantic paranormal
fiction. I was truly moved and engrossed!

**2006 PEARL NOMINEE - BEST OVERALL PARANORMAL ROMANCE** In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabilitation"—the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was... Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion—and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities—or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation...
