"a magical tale"

Life in the year of 1789 in Pouchay, Brittany was rough and hard. Many where starving, including Mariel St. Just's family and village. She has just one hope and dream, that a golden god would save her family and her people. So when Mariel sees Trystan l'Enforcer at Sea he is shocked she is able to see him or follow him. He watches her as she walks right through the force field that prevents outsiders from coming on the Isle. As he watches her walk onto the island, the feelings she brings out in him are strong and pure. He soon finds out why she has been allowed to come onto the island, the Gods have chosen her to be his soulmate. But she must be a hybrid but more mermaid than human. Even with his strong feelings for Mariel he still doesn't feel he should intervene to help the villagers. So it pushes Mariel to steal the battered chalice so she can sell it and get money for food for her people, she can't just stand by and watch them suffer and starve. But Trystan follows her and brings her and the sacred Chalice of Plenty back to the Island of Aelynn where it is to stay. But as Mariel spends more time with Trystan, and her feelings grow stronger, she must decide, is this man/god her future? Will they let their true feelings for each other flow free?

This is the first book I have read by Patricia Rice, but I can for sure say not my last. I really enjoyed this story. The conflicts and suffering that these people went through was horrible, but then they show you that no matter what life throws you that you will always have each other through hard and good times. More of us should understand these lessons today and our world would be so much stronger and peaceful.
