"The first in what is sure to be a fantastic series!"
Zoey would much rather be in school than at home. Ever
since her mother married The Step Loser, she had become
distant from her children and did everything she could to
please her new husband. Zoey's older sister is a
cheerleader, doing her own thing and paying lip service to
her parent. Her younger brother is lost in his own world of
games. Things could be worse though, Zoey could be Marked
like that other poor kid in school. Everyone, including
Zoey, avoided him. In the middle of her best friend Kayla's
babble, Zoey manages to catch that her almost boyfriend,
Heath, was drunk again. The next thing she knows, there's a
vampyre standing there who tells her to be at the House of
Night at midnight and proceeds to touch her forehead. When
Zoey wakes up, Kayla is looking strangely at her and not
getting too close. She's been Marked! Suddenly not feeling
well, Zoey rushes to the girl's bathroom and stays there
until everyone leaves. Eventually, Zoey goes home hoping against hope that her
mother will really listen to her for once and be there for
her. Naturally, that doesn't happen and Zoey ends up
running away in her VW to her grandmother Redbird's home.
On the way to meet her grandmother, who's left a note for
Zoey, Zoey doesn't feel well and passes out. When Zoey
hears her grandmother calling, she follows the voice to a
cavern underground and finds the Goddess Nyx who proceeds
to tell Zoey how special she is and how she expects her to
be her eyes and ears. When Zoey wakes up, she's already in The House of Night
with her grandmother by her side. The main healer and
priestess, Neferet, tells Zoey that she can pick her own
name and Zoey decides to go with Zoey Redbird, after all,
she has the Cherokee looks and loves her grandmother. After
her discussion with the Goddess, Zoey's mark is now
completely filled in, unlike the other fledglings'. So much
for Zoey's hope to fit in and being just be like everyone
else. And so begins Zoey's life as a fledging vampyre. Why has Zoey been marked by Nyx? Will Zoey ever fit in
anywhere? Exactly what is it Zoey is supposed to hear and
see to report to Nyx? MARKED: THE HOUSE OF NIGHT BOOK 1 is a thrilling peek into
a whole new world where vampyres coexist with humans. P.C.
Cast and her daughter, Kristin Cast, have proved that it is
possible for mothers and daughters to work well together.
Written in P.C. Cast's easy-to-read, fast-paced style with
plenty of humor thrown into the mix, this story was a sheer
pleasure to read. Sixteen year old Zoey is a totally
believable character as she tries to adjust to her life as
a fledging vampyre plus all the typical things teenage
girls deal with: boyfriends, or lack thereof, school,
friends, rivals and problems with her parents. I always
love P.C. Cast's books and this one is no exception to that
rule. I just can't wait for the next book in this series!

A House of Night Novel
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.
