"grabs the reader on the first page"
Alixandria Lancaster has been raised in a cult-like
atmosphere and has fought to get away from the Perfect
Human Race; and has been dragged back into it by her
brother Clay. Alixandria has to try to get Clay away from
the PHR, he is her only family and she can't just give up.
She doesn't believe that there are so-called deviants,
shape-shifter and the like. The other thing she has to
hide from the PHR is that she is telepathic; they would
destroy her in a heartbeat. Clay has found a wyvern
pendant and swears that this will bring the deviants out
of the woodwork so they can trap and torture them. When
Deverell walks into her shop all she can think to try to
do is prove her brother wrong and try to prevent Dev from
getting caught in the middle. Deverell Wyvern, a shape-shifting wyvern, is working as a
consultant for Dept 57 to try to find the murderers of a
dragon couple. The investigation has led them to Alix's
jewelry shop and the PHR. The dragon jewel that they have
is actually a powerful relic that can control a shape-
shifted dragon if the holder knows the words to activate
the spell. While trying to break the PHR, Deverell hopes
that he can take Alixandria away from them, and perhaps
show her how to control her gift. Lynne Connolly grabs the reader on the first page of this
book and doesn't let go until the last. When I got to the
end of the book I found myself wishing for more. This book
had me sucked into it from the beginning. I have read one
of the other Dept 57 books and wasn't disappointed; I
found this to be an engrossing read with well-fleshed
characters that are multidimensional and believable. I had
to know what was going to happen. I finished this book in
one sitting, and will be on the look out for any more in
the series.
