"Wonderful dark story!"

Berkeley Professor of Mathematics Fay Rae Lambers has not had an easy life. Struck with arthritis at an early age, every day is painful for her, which is exactly why she's so happy to be in Egypt. The heat and lack of humidity are helping with the pain. While running to catch the tour bus in the middle of a sand storm, Rae trips on something. Needless to say, she takes the time to dig it out and finds a very old box. Later, while her beautiful model sister, Angie, is taking a shower in their room, Rae opens the box and finds some parchment. On their way to dinner, Rae finds a shop keeper to translate the parchment. He immediately tells the sisters to get rid of the deck of Tarot Cards. It turns out these are the "Forbidden Tarot", cursed. After dinner, Angie decides to open the deck. After all, it must all be superstition, no one really believes in curses. So she pulls out a card with Typhoon on it and forces Rae to look at it.

After leaving her sister on the east coast, Rae meets Simeon, a very handsome man, on the plane trip to the west coast. The two of them start chatting and Rae is definitely interested in him, however, she knows nothing will ever come of it. Imagine her surprise when she goes to her office at the university and finds the man has sent her flowers and arranges for a date. Rae is also in shock when she discovers a man she maintained correspondence with has died and left half his house to her. Naturally, his son receives the other half and the two of them begin living in the house together. When they were children, Michael and Rae were the best of friends. In high school, their friendship ended and the two of them went their separate ways. Angie finally decides to leave her abusive boyfriend and she ends up living in the house with them as well.

Meanwhile, Rae has her suspicions regarding her mentor's death and decides to do a little digging on her own. Not to mention how her sister is beginning to sleep walk again and always ends up trying to dig something up from the backyard. Then there's also Michael's hatred of Simeon.

Exactly what is going on in this house? What of the hatred between Simeon and Michael? What of Rae's attraction to both men? Was Michael's father murdered?

THE DARK LORD is a totally engrossing read! Patricia Simpson has done a wonderful job of leading us on with this dark story. From the beautiful model Angie who flirts with every man she sees and isn't even aware of doing it, to the sick Rae, the constant pain she lives with having taken away her beauty. We also have Michael, angry at the world and his father in particular, Simeon, dark, handsome and rich. We also throw into the mix the money grabbing, soon to be ex-wife of Michael, and we definitely have a cast of characters. All flawed in their own way. As strange things begin happening to all these characters, the hunt begins to discover exactly what is going on and how the "Forbidden Tarot Cards" fit into the whole mess. This story held me on the edge of my seat and I didn't want to put it down until I discovered the mystery for myself. A wonderful story I highly recommend reading.
