"Oustanding Tour de Force Return"
The first book I picked up by Catherine Spangler, years
ago, was because I had a cat named Spangler. By that
funny quirk of fate, I found one of the most wonderful
writers and have been enjoying her books ever since. An
auto-buy, the RITA nominee writer has left Dorchester
Publishing and moved to Berkley, and in doing the jump,
has moved into a new series. While I am sure fans of the
Shielder series will bemoan Spangler's switch to another
genre, they cannot help but be amazed by this stunning new
series launch. Spangler leaves the Sci-Fi Romance subgenre and moves in
to the dark paranormal series with the Touched by
Darkness, book 1 of the Sentinel Series for Berkley
Sensation. I could not put this book down. Spangler's
Excalibur level wordsmithing, wove a spell and kept me
turning pages when I should have been in bed sleeping. I
just had to keep reading, cover-to-cover, non-stop. A dark, powerful and ancient evil walks amongst us, and
Dr. Kara Cantrell knows this only too well. She has come
to the small town of Zorro, Texas with the purpose of
hiding, hiding herself from the unspeakable terror, but
more importantly, hiding her son. Alex was born of a
passionate affair, but at the time Kara had little idea
what she had been sucked into. By the time she understood
fully, there was nothing left for her to do, but to take
her son and runŻand keep running. When she sees Damien Morgan, coming toward her, she fears
her running is over. Damien is a Sentinel. He's come to
protect her, but to do so he must use her, use the special
power within her. The dark ancient menace that traces its
roots back to Atlantis is already feasting on the souls of
Zorro and only Damien can save Kara and Alex. From the first pages, Spangler took hold of me and sucked
me into the world she created. I have long been a fan of
Spangler's works, and was sad to see the long gap in her
books as she moved from one publisher to another, but now
am very happy to say she is back. If anything, I think
the 'down-time' has sharpened her craft and her ability to
conjure these alternative worlds, in a breathless, non-
stop action book that is one of the best you will read
this year. Very highly recommended.

Dr. Kara Cantrell settled in the sleepy town of Zorro, Texas, convinced she and her child had escaped the sinister reach of a supernatural underworld. But now dark forces may jeopardize her new life. Her only hope is Damien Morgan, a dangerous, alluring man with superhuman abilities. He and Kara share a mystical link that triggers desires they must ignore. But as they work together to protect her son, and begin tracking the evil stalking them, something threatens to push them toward the edge...of darkness. Look for TOUCHED BY FIRE, Luke Paxton's story, in October 2007.
