"Ms. Connolly has another winner"
Deverell Wyvern, a shapeshifter and a consultant to Dept.
57, goes to a jewelry store owned by Alixander Lancaster
and her brother, Clay, to purchase a powerful talisman
belonging to his people. Deverell is, also, undercover
trying to bring down a terrorist cell of the PHR, an
organization that is trying to rid the world of people with
special abilities. It is believed that a cell of the PHR is
responsible for the deaths of a dragon and his mate, and
that Alix and Clay are members of the cell. Deverell
discovers that Alix has great telepathic powers, which she
has suppressed for far too long. He decides to use himself
as bait to capture the cell and to bring Alix in for
training. Alix and Deverell feel an instant, strong
attraction, but will Alix be able to overcome the prejudice
that has been drilled into her all her life? Ms. Connolly creates a complex, dynamic world with
interesting characters. I loved the fact that all the
shapeshifters are mythical creatures-- not your usual
shapeshifter types. Alix is a heroine torn between her
allegiance to her family and her developing feelings for
Deverell. She must overcome the brainwashing of a lifetime
to find happiness with Deverell. Deverell is a wonderful,
supportive hero who shows Alix that she is beautiful and
worthy of love. Alix, who has been denigrated by the PHR
all her life, believes that she is plain and unworthy. Ms.
Connolly has another winner, and I look forward to reading
the next Dept. 57 book. Posted June 23, 2006
