"a very fine ghost story"
Kit Schofield is under attack. Someone wants the young
wealthy woman dead bad
enough
to try several times, from a hit-and-run accident to an
outright sniper attack.
But who has
the motive to kill her when she's never done anything to
deserve it? Perhaps the
answer
lies in the resort she owns at Spirit Lake in Canada where
the last of her
mother's family
still live. Bart, her childhood friend and one-time
stepbrother, wants to keep
Kit alive and
so he follows her when she heads up North. He has his
reasons for wanting to
protect her,
in particular that he's never really bought into the
brother-sister relationship
between Kit
and himself. He wants to be with her, but it isn't brotherly
love he feels and
he knows Kit
feels the same way. Once at Spirit Lake, Kit and Bart must examine the past as
well as the present
to determine
the truth about who is out to kill her, and in addition
solve a many years' past
mystery.
The ghostly spirits who haunt the resort insist as they
provide their own unique
kind of
guidance to direct the investigation. Unquiet Spirits is a very fine ghost story with a lot of
mystery. I very much
enjoyed the
interactions of the two main characters as they work through
their feelings
about each
other in a realistic way, not too fast and not too slow. The
unquiet spirits of
the title add
an amusing touch at times, while at others they are a
chilling presence in the
book. The
writing is excellent, filled with lovely details about the
Canadian woods,
the lake, and
the lodge, which was a place I'd certainly love to visit.
The love scenes were
really good
too. The mystery aspects kept me guessing as to who was
responsible right up
until the
end of the book. As with all of Dee's books, including Ghost
Of A Chance, its
predecessor,
I recommend Unquiet Spirits for a change of pace from the
usual paranormal
thrillers.
