"Entertaining but violent fantasy world"
When the bodies of brutally murdered Clan members are
discovered, Dearn, the King of the Winged Clans, vows
vengeance on whoever is guilty of committing these
atrocities. When more bodies are found and many other
members of the clans are discovered to be missing, certain
evidence points to the guilt of the once presumed extinct
rogue Vulture Clan and their cohorts, a group of Humans
known as Elitists. Soon Dearn and his Warriors discover
that it is indeed the Vultures who have returned to once
again attempt to destroy the other Clans. But this time the
Vultures and their leader Edgar have new allies in the form
of the Bastard Breeds- descendants of the innocent children
who resulted from the rapes committed by the Vultures on
the women of the other Clans. The Bastards were once
sentenced to a fiery death alongside the Vultures simply
due to their mixed parentage, and were also thought to have
been wiped out centuries ago. A war between Clan and
Vulture is imminent, and Dearn is determined to be right
there in the thick of things, exacting his own revenge. Matte is the leader of the Bastard Breeds. She and her
warriors have accompanied Edgar on his quest to destroy the
Winged Clans, but all is not as it seems and Matte may have
a hidden agenda. Dearn has never known of a woman warrior
before and he doesn't know quite what to make of her when
they meet. He does know that he feels irresistibly drawn to
her. He hopes he can believe her claim that the Bastard
Breeds will fight for the Clans in spite of the unfair
treatment they received in the past, because if not, the
Clans may be lost. The truth will come out in the middle of
the deadly battle soon to be fought. Author Shadoe Simmons has created a beautiful but brutal
world in BROKEN WINGS. She doesn't pull any punches in her
depiction of the brutality and ruthlessness of the Vulture
Clan. Dearn is a leader who has never faced this sort of
destruction before and his sometimes fool hearty character
is violently transformed in the fire of battle but refined
through the power of love. Matte is a pioneer among her
people, leading them to a new and better life. An
engrossing read that was difficult to put down, I wished I
had the next installment of The Chronicles of the Winged
Warriors at hand. Reviewed by Janice Bennett
