"Exciting paranormal with lots of characters to enjoy"
Rachel Morgan hates her job working as a runner for
Inlander Security. Fairly certain her boss has it out for
her by assigning jobs degrading and far beneath her job
skills, it's not hard for Rachel to decide to quit when she
is bribed by the leprechaun she is sent to pick up with
three wishes. However when Ivy (a living vampire),
Inlanders' best runner quits as well, Rachel's unnoticed
quit becomes glaringly obvious and she has a death threat
put on her as well as all her possessions be-spelled with
black magic. Moving into a church with Ivy and a pixie named Jenks seems
the most plausible business solution until she can make the
cash to remove the death threat and get back onto her
feet. Little does Rachel know that it will take all three
of their combined efforts to just keep her alive. Kim Harrison has an excellent series in the making, and I'm
really excited to see how the books continue and the
plethora of characters develop. While Jenks is pretty
straight forward, I still really like him as an individual
as well as his enormous family. Ivy is mysterious and I
will admit, at first I wasn't interested in her (even
though she is a vampire and I love vampire stories!), but
her character grew on me so I'm excited to see she will
have her own story. While there is a lot happening in DEAD WITCH WALKING and I
was really sucked into the story wanting to know what would
happen next, I had a rough time getting into the history
behind the alternate reality Kim Harrison created. So,
keep reading even if you are struggling through the first
quarter of the book. Between the charms that Rachel
creates, reading the vampire bible on the bus, to the
mysterious next door neighbor (that I'd like to know more
about) the story is so worth it. Rachel is trying to survive quitting her job and thinks
pinning Trent Kalamack (one of the cities richest men as
well as a playboy and major contributor to local charities)
as a smuggler of Brimstone will help buy of the death
threat and end spells hanging over her head. If that
sounds interesting, wait until you see what happens when
she gets caught. Rachel is a tough, kick butt heroine that
is in way over her head and knows it. What I liked about
her is she does what she thinks is right even though the
consequences are painful. She is also less than perfect so
her plans aren't always successful. I bought the book because I liked the title and it sounded
interesting. Generally I read only romances and well, yeah
Rachel rescues a guy while trying to save herself, but
there really isn't a romance between the two. So I don't
know if that will develop later or what. So if you are
looking for a romantic read, this isn't it; regardless, I'm
curious and hooked! As mentioned I can hardly wait to see what happens next
because DEAD WITCH WALKING kind of ends with a stale mate
between Rachel and Trent. So, I would recommend reading
the books in order. A little bit comedy, a lot of action
and a well rounded world of paranormal characters will make
DEAD WITCH WALKING more than memorable as well as leave the
reader wanting more.
