"A very good reason to go down to the sea again."
The war was over; the war had not yet begun. It was the
between time, 1929, and the place is a castle in Scotland.
American Hexy Garrow's employer, Jillian, is sure she has
left her fur coat on the beach and sends Hexy to retrieve
it. While looking for it, Hexy takes a moment to sit on the
beach and grieve for her lost brother. In doing so she
sheds seven tears, tears that will set in motion things
that will change her life forever. When she does find the
fur, she finds herself strangely drawn to it to the point
that she sleeps in it that night. The next morning, though,
it is packed and sent off to Italy with Jillian.
Drawn to Hexy by her tears and her taking of his skin,
Ruairidh (Rory) O'Uruisg comes to claim Hexy as he thinks
she is calling him to. However, Hexy has no idea what he
is, nor would she believe him if he told her. She didn't
realize that the fur she sent with Jillian was the wrong
one and works to get it back. While waiting on its return,
she finds herself becoming involved with Rory--an
involvement that reveals to both of them secrets about
themselves. Will the secrets they uncover be enough to win
the battles they must fight and keep Rory with Hexy for
more than twelve months and a day?
THE SELKIE, of course is about a selkie. Melanie Jackson
put a lot of effort into making this an admirably
believable story about a mythical creature. The time
setting adds to its enchantment. The hero is certainly one
that those who love the sea would enjoy meeting. The
mystery surrounding the heroine adds depth and an extrinsic
element to the story. The secondary characters were
alluring and had you longing to learn more about them. My
only complaint was that though I found this to be an
excellent story and I enjoyed it immensely, when I was
finished, I felt like I was missing something. I had the
feeling that there could have been much more to it. ParaNormal Romance Reviews © Copyright 2003

While the technology of the wars had changed the face of Europe, some things stayed the same; the tempestuous Scottish coast and the surrounding sea remained a place of unquenchable magic and mystery. Sequestered at Fintry Castle by the whim of her mistress, Hexy Garrow spared seven tears for her past -- all of which were swallowed by the waves. By joining the water, those tears completed a ritual, and that ritual summoned a prince. He came for Hexy -- and for something she didn't know she had stolen. His very nature went against all Hexy had ever believed, but his love was everything she'd ever desired. And he'd come not to collect her for the insatiable ocean, but for himself.
