"Parents should read this"
From the federal government to a ton of literature,
pressure is on parents to push their children into high
level educational situations. The Feds even considered
funding classical music in maternity wards and the
pregnant mother was expected to listen before giving
birth. Choosing the right preschool became more of how
much the kid learns than a safe environment to develop and
nurture the full child. The media added to the frenzy as
listening to Mozart will increase your child's learning
skills make for a fine human interest piece. With that backdrop, the child psychologist authors
reviewed the developmental research and concluded that
accelerated learning is a sham and children do best when
they are encouraged to develop on their own. Curiosity is
what accelerates learning not piped in programmed
packages. The book provides specific exercises and makes
it easier for the lay-person to comprehend development and
learning. Basically let the kid have fun, but provide the
safe environment that will inspire the child to go down
their path not some pseudo costly pre-packaged mumbo
jumbo. Einstein learned by doing. This is a strong
reference book that should be part of every educator's
library as a reminder to "how our children really learn
and why they need to play more and memorize less." Think
back to your own childhood in which your parents let
you "create" your play. Bottom line is parents chill out
as our parents did. If you do not want to hear Mozart,
just do not get a CD. Harriet Klausner
