"A powerful novel"
Dr. Eleanor Grayson serves as the large animal doctor
at the biggest veterinary hospital in Tennessee, Creature
Comfort. Now she is placed in charge of the new farm
program at the local prison where she meets Steve Chadwick,
who has spent three years in jail convicted of homicide.
He was mourning the death of his spouse when he was
convicted of killing her. Steve lives for one thing, vengeance on the individual
who murdered his wife and shredded his business, his former
partner and brother-in-law. This obsession is all that
keeps Steve sane and alive until he meets Eleanor. The two
are attracted to one another, but neither wants it.
Eleanor is just another obstacle in the way of Steve
completing his agenda. Steve cannot replace Eleanor's
beloved deceased husband. Then there is the extra
impediment of he being a guest and employee of the state. Though not quite as remarkable as the incredibly
insightful THE MONEY MAN, Carolyn Mcsparren's latest tale,
THE PAYBACK MAN, remains a powerful novel. Once again the
story line provides a strong case for animal rights inside
a romantic suspense novel starring two of life's walking
wounded. The support cast augments the plot with depth
enabling a multi-layered plot, yet the forbidden love
between the lead characters makes this robust book worth
reading. Harriet Klausner
