"A Creative and entertaining fantasy romance"
I just finished reading a super book! The story takes
place during the time of Henry II, more specifically when
his sons tried to usurp his throne. Malinda Brinlaw is half human/half faery. Being anything
but human during Henry's time was dangerous, so her
magical abilities are a well-kept secret in her father's
holding. Tarquin FitzBruel, the half-brother of Malinda's
friend, Nan, comes back to England after many years
abroad. He is the bastard of a nobleman and a witch who
was raised by Malinda's faery mother, but left when
Malinda was very young. Tarquin recognizes Malinda as the
woman whom he saw in a prophetic trance. She recognizes
Tarquin as the young boy she helped in a vision from the
past. It is destined that they be together, but Tarquin
fights it because he feels he is a demon and will destroy
Malinda. Outside forces are also at work. One of Henry's
noblemen has an ax to grind with Tarquin and he chooses to
use Malinda to do it. The conclusion is very well done
and involves a creative use of shape-shifting. This is
Jayel's second book for Pocket. I liked it well enough
that I will search for the first one, A FALCON'S HEART.
