SummaryTom and his wife have split up, this time for good. He
moves to The Viceroy, an apartment building in the city. He
encounters a mystery there, the disappearance of the first
owner, whom some suspect had been murdered over forty years
ago, though his body was never found.
Tom meets several of the other tenants. Cherie, a talented
but eccentric musician, ignores him at first, and then
pursues him. Rebecca tries not to show too much interest in
Tom, but it's there. Teresa had been at The Viceroy for a
few years, and she gives him clues to the mystery, and a
few other unexpected things. Guy and Mary are deep into
BDSM, and they see potential in the new tenant. Not really
intending to seduce, Tom has several erotic adventures.
He finds an old, unused passageway, and it puts him on the
trail of the missing owner. Tom discovers a few secrets,
and a written history. We're taken into the past, and how
life and love was in the early fifties at The Viceroy.
Throughout the story, Tom continues to ask: whatever
happened to the owner, anyway?
