Summary

Unbeknownst to the good citizens of Bath, the nimble- fingered French dressmaker who has recently taken the town's fashionable fancy by storm, lives a double life. No one knows Madame Nicolette's secrets, no one suspects but the Duke of Chandrose who refuses to pay for the trousseau of his jilted bride. The Duke has good reason to distrust women. Madame has even better reason to avoid the inquisitive Duke, and yet the Duke and the dressmaker soon become the talk of the town as their secrets, and growing affections for one another, are plucked forth like silver surprises from a Christmas plum pudding.
