James C. Bassett

I was born on the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut and grew up as a Navy brat, a circumstance from which I've never completely recovered. I've lived in San Diego, Ocean Beach, Carmel, and Pebble Beach, California; Quonset Point NAS, Rhode Island; Colts Neck (NWS Earle) and Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Ithaca, New York; Gulf Breeze and Gainesville, Florida; Louisville, Kentucky; Atlanta, Athens, and Decatur, Georgia, Columbia, South Carolina; Jakarta, Indonesia; and currently (for a good long while, I hope) Seattle, Washington -- my 35th address. Whew!

I studied Electrical Engineering at Cornell University and 20th Century American Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Florida.

I'm vegan. I brew my own beer. I do crossword puzzles in my head, without writing in the answers.

None of which has had any influence on my art. I write what I want to write and I carve what I want to carve, no hidden agendas. If you want to read anything into my works, go right ahead. Your ideas are just as valid as mine. Art is a dialogue.
