Growing up in a home with teacher parents exposed me to books early in life, and being shy, I took to reading as a way to meet and experience the world without threat. Even before learning to read, however, storytelling captured my imagination. At four or five I was making up my own bedtime stories. So writing seemed a natural progression. And when I discovered and fell in love with science fiction and mysteries, of course I began writing SF and mysteries. I think the uncertainties of growing up in the Cold War influenced my love of SF and mysteries. While the world seemed likely to blow up at any time, in these genres the application of science and reason brought order to chaotic situations (aliens landing, a murder committed). The biggest problem was deciding whether to write an SF story or a mystery. My solution was to write both at once. So while I have some straight science fiction and fantasy, most of my books are mysteries with SF or fantasy elements. |
