Nora Roberts was born in Silver Spring Maryland, the youngest of five children. After a school career that included some time in Catholic school and the disciplines of nuns, she married young and settled in Keedysville, Maryland. She worked briefly as a legal secretary. "I could type fast but couldn't spell, I was the worst legal secretary ever," she says now. After her sons were born she stayed home and tried every craft that came along. A blizzard in February 1979 forced her hand to try another creative outlet. She was snowed in with a three and six year old with no kindergarten respite in sight and a dwindling supply of chocolate. Born into a family of readers, Nora had never known a time that she wasn't reading or making up stories. During the now famous blizzard, she pulled out a pencil and notebook and began to write down one of those stories. It was there that a career was born. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by Silhouette in 1981. Nora met her second husband, Bruce Wilder, when she hired him to build bookshelves. They were married in July 1985. Since that time, they've expanded their home, traveled the world and opened a bookstore together. Through the years, Nora has always been surrounded by men. Not only was she the youngest in her family, but she was also the only girl. She has raised two sons. Having spent her life surrounded by men has given Ms. Roberts a fairly good view of the workings of the male mind, which is a constant delight to her readers. It was, she's been quoted as saying, a choice between figuring men out or running away screaming. Nora is a member of several writers groups and has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry.
PNR: Naturally any reader of would recognize Nora Roberts as a prolific, best selling author in the romance genre. Still when discussing speculative fiction, most paranormal romance readers will focus on the J. D. Robb In Death futuristic suspense series. Many may be unaware that you have written at least a dozen romances with paranormal elements since the late 80s. Have you found that the Roberts and Robb books attract vastly different audiences, or do have you seen a significant amount of crossover? Nora R .: I don't think they are vastly different audiences -- most are looking for a good story. Many Nora Roberts fans have followed over to JD Robb, and some quite bluntly say that the Robbs are now their favorite books. There have been some readers who started the In Deaths because they found them in the Mystery section and were intrigued. It was quite a few books before the "Nora Roberts writing as" tag was used on the cover of the In Deaths, so many readers didn't know the connection before they started the series. PNR: You've written time travel, ghosts, fairies, and witches, in series romances, single title novels, and anthologies for Silhouette and Berkley/Jove. What inspired you to write these kind of tales? At any time did you feel you were taking a risk? Nora R .: The beauty of the romance genre is that you can write ANY genre within the romance framework. I didn't consider the types of books you mentioned as risks at the time I was writing them. I wrote the stories I wanted to read and was fortunate enough that readers enjoyed them. PNR: Your most recent Three Sisters Island trilogy is your second witch series. In both series your characters have been witches by heredity rather than by choice. What influenced you to go in that direction? Nora R .: No influence really, it's more my basic enjoyment of stories about families and the game of what if. What if there were cousins who happened to be witches? What if each had a talent stronger than the others? I keep asking until I have the answers. PNR: Both The Donovan Legacy stories and the new Three Sisters Island novels are contemporary romances, yet they are quite different in flavor. The former trilogy was a Silhouette mini series, the latter of course are full length single title romances. We understand that your career goals have led to an amiable parting with Silhouette, much to the regret of many readers I'm sure. Do you feel a more generous word limit gives you more freedom to explore your characters? What are the advantages and/or challenges of each format? Nora R .: It's more a matter of pace than word limits. In the structured world of category, you need to tell a story quickly. In a longer format, I can tell the story more slowly. In both cases, I use that pace to flesh out my characters fully. PNR: Your series frequently revolve around family, legend, and legacy. The Three Sisters Island trilogy is no exception. The heroines, as we said, are all hereditary witches, and each is a descendant of one of the original three sisters who founded the island. They have also been designated to fulfill a prophecy laid down three centuries prior. Could you set the stage for our readers with the events which set their legacy in motion? Nora R .: A spell that protected Three Sisters Island for nearly three hundred years is near its end. Now three modern descendents of the founders of the Island have to face and accept their own destinies in order to save Three Sisters Island. PNR: What inspired the occupations you chose for each of the three women? Nora R .: It's another example of asking what if -- Nell, Ripley and Mia fit the answers. PNR: There is something I am curious about. Zack is the older brother of Ripley Todd, island deputy, and the descendant of the one called Earth. How is it that Ripley has power, and Zack does not? What is his reaction to discovering that the woman he is falling in love with is a witch? Nora R .: It's just that hereditary roll of the dice. But he's fairly comfortable with the power found in the people he loves. PNR: Ripley's confrontation with the darkness is perhaps the most dramatic of the three. She is tempted by power, both her own, and the dark power of her enemy, as was her predicessor. She had tried to suppress it for decade, and now must find a way embrace it and control it. Like Earth, she must struggle to find the difference between justice and revenge. This scene is so powerful that I could practically sense the electricity in the air. Was this conflict fun to write? Did it come easily, or was it a challenge for you? Nora R .: Fun isn't always the word that comes to mind when you are in the throes of finishing a book. LOL Each of the climactic scenes in the Three Sisters trilogy had their own power and force, which I certainly felt. If I don't feel that power, the readers certainly won't. PNR: The final tale of the Trilogy is FACE THE FIRE. This is Mia Devlin's story. One of the nice things about a series, is that by now the reader is quite familiar with Mia's character, and the events that have transpired to make her what she is, before they even crack this book. Our sympathies are already with her when the man who broke her heart returns for her a decade later. How difficult was it to make Sam Logan sympathetic? Nora R .: Sam Logan was hugely conflicted when he left Mia, by understanding his confusion, I could make him sympathetic. PNR: The hardest thing for me as a woman to understand is why Sam is puzzled at Mia's reluctance to involve her heart in their relationship having been once burned. How do you get inside the head of your heroes? Nora
R .:
Never really thought about it, it's a
matter of knowing all your characters -- male and female. It could
be that as a woman always surrounded by men -- five brothers, two
sons, one husband -- I've made a lifelong study of them. Nora R .: In Purity In Death, Eve faces a computer virus that is driving people to violence, seemingly moving from machine to man. I plan to continue to write about Eve and Roarke for the foreseeable future -- I'm having too much fun to stop. PNR: What is next from Nora Roberts/J. D. Robb? Nora R .: Purity In Death will be out on Aug. 27. Then in November, Chesapeake Blue, the story of a grown up Seth Quinn, will be out in hardcover. |
